Abraham writes Trump in support of new I-10 bridge in Lake Charles
WASHINGTON - Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-Alto, has written President Trump to offer his support for completing a new I-10 bridge in Lake Charles.
Abraham’s letter calls for replacing the bridge that is now seeing more than twice as many daily crossings as it did when it was first built. He also indicated his support of the Chamber of Southwest Louisiana’s proposal to seek a public-private partnership to help fund the bridge.
Abraham, who represents Louisiana’s 5th District, notes that the bridge is important for the state’s overall economy due to the shipment of oil and gas and agriculture commodities that the bridge helps facilitate. Products from across the state can be transported along the route, and a reliable bridge is essential to keep commerce flowing.
“Our great state has so much potential that has yet to be unleashed, and strategic investments in innovative projects like the I-10 Bridge are necessary to move us forward,” Abraham wrote. “The people of Louisiana stand ready to move forward on this and on many more projects in the future, and I look forward to working with you and your administration to see it through.”
President Trump indicated his support for a new bridge during a visit to southwestern Louisiana earlier this year. Abraham has spoken with U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins, who represents Lake Charles and has also written in support of the bridge.
“Congressman Higgins knows how important this project is not only to his district, but to the state of Louisiana. We’re going to work together with President Trump to see that this gets done,” Abraham said.
