Rev. LeFleur to be honored Tuesday
A military ceremony will posthumously award the Distinguished Service Cross at St. Landry Catholic Church on Tuesday to Rev. Verbis LaFleur, who died in 1944 attempting to save men aboard a Japanese prisoner of war ship that sank in the Indian Ocean.
The 9 a.m. presentation, according to St. Landry Catholic Church Pastor James Brady, will be made by U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham and military and church officials.
LaFleur, a native of Ville Platte who later moved to Opelousas, was a lieutenant and chaplain in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the time of his death.
