Rep. Abraham opposes separating immigrant families; Johnson won't say
U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham, R-Louisiana, said Tuesday that he opposes the separation of immigrant children from their parents who brought them illegally into the United States while also generally defending the Trump Administration's approach to immigration enforcement.
Abraham, a Republican who represents the 5th District, said in a statement from his office that he supported tough border security measures such as erecting a border wall but that families should not be separated.
The nation got to this point, he said, because the United States has a system that encourages immigrants to enter the country illegally.
Abraham also expressed sympathy for U.S. citizens who have been the victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
"Children and families shouldn’t be separated, including American families who have been torn apart by violent crimes perpetrated by illegal immigrants. If a family illegally enters this country together, they should be deported together," he said.
