Louisiana Rep. Ralph Abraham joined hurricane hunters flying into Maria last weekend while she was a Category 3 storm with 115 mph winds.
Abraham, R-Alto, who sits on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee that oversees the NOAA Hurricane Hunters, said the plane flew into the eye nine times.
NOAA is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
"We'd go from winds as high as 118 mph and then 5 mph winds in the eye of the hurricane; it was a dramatic transition," Abraham said. "This is something as an aviator I've always wanted to do."
