WASHINGTON -- The House voted 409-0 Tuesday (July 28) to increase veterans' disability benefits based on the the cost-of-living adjustment awarded to Social Security recipients.

The increase would take effect December 1. Congress must vote to increase the benefits every year to give veterans an annual cost-of-living hike in disability benefits.

The legislation was sponsored by freshman Rep. Ralph Abraham, R-Alto, and marks his first bill approved by his House colleagues.

"I'm proud to have authored and passed this important piece of legislation," Abraham said. "A broad, bipartisan coalition supported my bill as Congress recognized the need to support our veterans. Our American heroes took care of us, and now we need to take care of them."
