Congress hears from both sides of troubled Phila. VA facility

Managers of the troubled Veterans Affairs benefits office in Philadelphia reported significant progress fixing problems identified in a scathing inspector general's report, but many workers disagree, members of Congress said after meeting with both groups Monday.

Seven U.S. representatives, including the top Republicans and Democrats on House committees with oversight of the VA, were visiting to follow up on an April reprot from the agency's inspector general that found widespred mishandling of veterans' benefits claims.

Rep. Ralph "Doc" Abraham (R., La.) said in an interview that the new report would point the way to further change.

"This visit wasn't a witch hunt, but we've got major challenges and there are going to be major changes," said Abraham, chairman of the subcommittee that has oversight over VA programs.
