The Republican-controlled Congress is scrapping an Obama regulation regarding gun ownership for some Social Security recipients. The law required extended background checks for gun purchases by some Social Security recipients with mental disabilities.
The bill was sponsored by Republican Sam Johnson of Texas and co-authored by 5th District Congressman Ralph Abraham, 3rd District Congressman Clay Higgins and 1st District Congressman Steve Scalise.
According to Abraham, the bill was passed as an effort to defend the Second Amendment rights of Social Security beneficiaries. It passed the House with a 235-180 vote.
