Abraham blocks Obama floodplain expansion
Fifth District U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham said his amendment to the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Bill passed by the full House Friday could protect millions of Americans from being forced to buy expensive federal flood insurance.
Abraham’s amendment prevents funding for President Obama’s executive order that changed the Federal Flood Risk Management Standard.
The order would raise fund protection standards to meet a 500-year flood rather than the current 100-year flood, which the congressman said would have pushed more property into expanded flood zones and forced home and business owners to buy flood insurance.
“The administration crafted this policy in secret without input on its merits from local officials and stakeholders, those who will have to live with this policy,” Abraham said. “The Office of Management and Budget predicts that this standard will significantly increase the cost of living and doing business in all areas that are at any risk of flooding.”
